Good news, sports movie fans — a sequel to the classic 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore is officially in the works, as confirmed by Netflix on Wednesday.

The original movie centers around a hockey player, played by renowned actor Adam Sandler, who has very clear anger management issues. When his grandmother needs money in order to keep her house, he uses his athletic skills to enter a golf tournament and win money to help her.

The PGA Tour social media account celebrated the announcement by posting an old clip of Sandler on the golf course.

While competing in his newly found sport, Gilmore goes head-to-head with Shooter McGavin, one of the most iconic sports movies villains. McGavin was played by Christopher McDonald, who will also be returning with Sandler in the second movie.

The rumors of this sequel have been going around since earlier this year, but Netflix finally made it official this week. The company did not release many details, but Happy Gilmore 2 seems to be in the early stages of production. The release day is expected to be in 2026.

According to movie database IMDb, the original Happy Gilmore movie is still considered one of the most popular sports movies of all time, topping other popular films such as Rocky, A League of Their Own, Space Jam and The Sandlot.
